Cat Woman

Published by DC Comics, Catwoman was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. She first appeared in the first edition of Batman, way back in 1940. Originally she was a burglar and an enemy of Batman, but in later comics, the two seemed to have a romantic interest in each other. The character of Catwoman does not like killing and even though she is a petty criminal, she does team up to help Batman out once in a while.

Catwoman is the alter – ego of Selina Kyle, the world’s greatest cat burglar. Her name comes from her ability to move as quickly as a cat. She is neither a superhero nor a villain and can hold her own with most of the devious comic book characters. She is not involved with fighting crime for the good of mankind, bit only for what money she can get out of it.

During the 1970’s DC Comics published a series of comics in which Catwoman and Batman found themselves in a parallel universe. Here they married and had a daughter, who was also a crimefighter as the Huntress. At first Catwoman was known only as the Cat and her costume consisted of a face covering that looked very much like a cat. In later issues, her costume gradually changed to hooded dress with ears and later to a fitted body suit with boots attached to it. She wore a mask that seemed to be like cat’s eyes glasses. Because she was a villain, in the 1960’s her costume was green as were though of other bad characters in the comics. In the 1990’s the color was changed to purple and in the movie Batman Returns she has switched to black leather as the material in her costume.

Catwoman got her own comic book series with writer Ed Brubaker, which started in 2001. This series is still in production and is enjoying great success.
