Christian Comic Books

What a wonderful way to introduce the stories of the Bible to children! Christian comic books tell the bible stories in colourful pictures that help children understand the time-honoured stories upon which our faith is built. Many people do not realize that this genre exists in comic books. The storylines deal with something more fundamental than following the latest adventures of a superhero. They actually deal with the ultimate superhero - Jesus and his apostles. These comic books cover the stories from both the Old and the New Testaments and provide great reading material for any age.

Many of the popular comic book creators also create Christian comic books. The creator of the Bart Simpson comics, Chris Yambar, also creates a Christian comic, Mr. Beat and one of the most popular stories in this series is entitled 'Coffee With Jesus'. Some of the superheroes you will meet in this genre have names such as the Cardinal, Mr. Christian and the Armor-Bearer. Their adventures deal with fighting evil and good always wins out in the end.

Many of the Christian comics do not appear to have a Christian message behind them when you first glance through them. The writers have developed a way of getting the Christian message across in a very subtle way. They do not believe in separating religion from the rest of society but try to integrate it in all of their story lines. Many Christians associate comics as something different from Christianity and do not see the importance of trying to be part of the popular culture. They realize that Christians lead ordinary lifestyles and often cannot find any suitable reading material that puts everything into focus. This is a niche that Christian comic books are trying to fill.

Although Christian comic books do not have a large section of the market when it comes to sales, there are different ways to measure success. While some people determine the success of a comic book by how many copies it sells, those in the Christian comic book sector determine the success of a comic by how many lives it affects.
