Collector Comics

If you are serious about collector comics, you do need to know the grading method used to determine the value of the comics. The physical condition of the comic book is a very important factor. You can purchase books that tell you how to determine the value of the comics you have in your collection or you can bring them to an expert who will gladly grade them for you.

Some of the grading criteria used for the physical conditions of comics are:

  • M (Mint) - this refers to a comic that has no signs of wear. It is very rare to find a comic in this condition.
  • NM (Near mint) - the colors are still bright and any creases or tears in the pages are not easily seen.
  • VF (Very Fine) - has some imperfections such as slight fading.
  • F (Fine) - has the centrefold still attached and any visible creases are less than 4 inches long.
  • VG (Very Good) - may have a tear in the cover or some writing on the pages.
  • G (Good) - lots of wear and tear but the comic is still readable.
  • F (Fair) and P (Poor) - in poor condition from water damage, mildew, torn cover, missing pages.

When you have collector comics, you do need to store them properly in order to preserve their value. Placing each comic in its own separate plastic bag is one way to store your comics. The plastic bag you use should be a high grade plastic and one that will not cause the comic to yellow with age. You should also use a backing board for the comic inside the bag. This will help keep the book flat and straight, making it impossible to roll up. The backing should have a calcium buffer so that any chemicals in the backing or the plastic will not damage the comic. Both the bag and the backing should be changed after five years.
