Comic book collectors avidly look for missing comics to add to their collections. Some of these collectors actually run their own stores where they buy and sell comics, both new and used and sometimes they come across a rare find which nets them thousands of dollars when they sell a particular comic book. Some collectors participate in shows where they showcase their collections and unload comics that sell at cheaper price. At the same time, collectors attend shows and flea markets trying to find a particular issue that they need or would like to have.
Comic book collectors know all the terminology of comic collecting and know how to preserve the issues they have in their collections. Most of them get started with their collections simply because they love reading them over and over and then realize that some of the issues they own are very valuable. Having a sizeable collection is an investment. Just as you invest in the stock market or put your money in a savings account, having a comic book collection is something that you can sell if the time comes when you need funds.
Comic books increase in value according to their age and the popularity of the title. If you are lucky enough to have copies of comics that sold for 10 or 12 cents, a copy in excellent condition could be worth a lot of money. Some Spiderman comics have sold for as much as $40,000, while a first issue of Batman is worth about $250,000. Experts in the field estimate that the value of comic books rises about 8 to 10% a year, which is a much better return than you get from banks. However, this does not apply to all comic books, which sometimes only reach a peak value of a few dollars.
