For over sixty years readers have been enjoying the adventures portrayed in the pages of each new DC comic book. The company is one of the largest publishers of comic books and is the only one with a complete line of comics for readers of every age. From the superhero comics to the adult comic line of Vertigo, there is something for everyone. The company publishes over 80 different titles each month.
The first DC comic book appeared in 1935 with a series of fun comic books for children. The company later expanded the genres to include detective comic books and in 1938 debuted the famous Superman. This issue signifies the birth of the superhero of comic book fame after which many other superheroes were patterned. A second superhero, Batman, was another DC comic book success and was rapidly followed by The Flash, Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern, and the first team of superheroes with the Justice Society of America.
While many of the characters from the DC comic books were developed into TV shows, movies and action figures, the company continues with its success by developing comic books to help teenagers with their many problems. Titles emerged dealing with drug problems, pollution and prejudice. These stories dealt with the complex issues facing society.
During the 1970's, the DC comic book revived the horror genre with its release of 'The Swamp Thing'. The release of 'Watchmen' in 1986 took a different view of the superhero phenomenon and this series actually became the best selling comic of all time. Batman was redefined during this decade and returned to the pages of comic books. The Sandman was a radical defection from the superhero theme and paved the way for an adult genre with more mature themes and reading material.
The Death of Superman in the 1990's shows that the DC comic book company is still in its prime and shows no signs of slowing down.
