There were many different types of families portrayed in comic books of the past. These family comic books presented good, clean entertainment for the whole family where the parents could read comics along with the children and even sit and read with them with the children looked at the pictures. While the typical American family was portrayed on TV in shows such as Father Knows Best or Leave It To Beaver, the family comic books such as Dennis the Mennis also put forward the same images.
Some of the family comic books portrayed a different version of the family. For example in Blondie and Dagwood, Blondie seems to be a stereotypical blonde before she gets married and then turns out to be the dominant one in the relationship. The comic books that had to do with rich people also portrayed the children of wealthy families as looking for love. Richie Rich, for example, had plenty of money, but tried to buy friends. Veronica, in the Archie comics, is an example fo a rich girl who leads a normal life when it comes to friends, but one who can have whatever she wants.
The Archie comics were and still are the true family comic books because they portray scenes and situations that teens commonly find themselves in. The storylines center around dating, school and hanging out with friends. There are also the outsiders presented in these comics that are common in every teenage society and who don't know how to behave without being a bully.
Even the superheroes had a family life and this was portrayed in the comic books. Through the pages of the comics, we got to know all about Superman's background and his normal upbringing, the murder of Peter Parker's uncle and how he came to be Spiderman and the relationship between Batman and Robin. Some of the comics gave families hope that things would improve, let them know that they were a normal family or gave them a glimpse into what a normal family looked like.
