Everyone remembers the Archie and Veronica comic books and if asked what are the most famous comic books, you would probably answer that these were. The most famous comic books for collectors are those that were originally sold for a dime and include titles such as 'Little Lulu', 'Batman', 'Superman', 'Captain Marvel' and the Archie comics. Did you know that copies of the 10 cent comics of Superman and Batman are actually worth a quarter of a million dollars on today's comic market?
Popeye is another of the famous comic books, who didn't actually fight crime in the ordinary way, but did it by eating spinach. Dick Tracy was an example of an ordinary person portrayed as a crime fighter in the early comics. The first comics were published in the days of the Great Depression, Al Capone and Prohibition. People were looking for entertainment different from listening to the radio all the time and also needed some guidance for good citizenship. The inexpensive price made comics very affordable reading material for both children and adults.
The most famous comic books are the ones that were published between 1934 and 1961. The Superhero comics published during the Second World War show the superheroes fighting the enemy - usually the forces of Hitler. While these offered entertainment, they were read by young and old because they did offer inspiration because these comics also featured the American flag and other patriotic symbols. After 1961, the price of the comics started to rise and many of those published after that date don't have very much value, except for the Spiderman, X-Men and the Fantastic Four comic books.
Whether the comic is one of the famous comic books or not, if it is not in really good condition it doesn't have any value. The comic has to be readable, not have any tears or creases and be in excellent physical condition in order for it to be worth any amount of money.
