the Silver Surfer

The Silver Surfer was created in 1966 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, two well known names in the history of comic books. The Silver Surfer was the herald of Galactus, a character introduced in issue #48 of the Fantastic Four. The Silver Surfer appeared in this issue to try to get his master to destroy Earth. However, he met Alicia Masters and as a result he turned against Galactus. The result was that the Silver Surfer remained trapped forever on Earth.

The Silver Surfer made appearances in other comics and became a favorite of the comic book readers. It was not until 1968 that the Silver Surfer became a title and it was then readers saw how this character came to be. He was a silver color and came from the planet Zenn. He was the only one that stood up to Galactus when he invaded this planet and to save his people he travelled throughout the universe to find planets for Galactus to feed on. In saving the Earth he lost his own freedom and couldn’t return home.

Fans preferred to have the Silver Surfer playing a supporting role in the comics, rather than being the main character. He continued to help other superheroes, but did appear as the main character twice after that – in 1982 and in 1987. It was the latter writing that made the Silver Surfer a success after so many years. Now with over 100 issues, the silver superhero is still doing well.

Many writers have had the chance to write the story line for the Silver Surfer comics. An animated series emerged based on the character in 1998, but the Silver Surfer in the comics came to an early end with a dispute between Marvel Comics and Saban. The series still continued for a few more years, finally ending in 2004.
