Spawn
Spawn is the main character of a comic book written by Todd McFarlane. In this story, Al Simmons, an employee of the U,S, government makes a deal with the devil when he is murdered in a foreign country. He agrees to serve the devil if he will only allow him to see his wife one last time. When he does return to Earth, five years have passed and his wife is remarried leaving Simmons with two options, follow the devil or renounce him. He eventually kills the devil, but does not want to rule Hell and so he returns to Earth.
Upon his return, Spawn realizes that he has supernatural powers, which he puts to use doing good. He defeats a dark god. Since he is technically dead, things that would harm a human do not have any effect on him. He has armour on his body, can heal himself, can change into many different shapes and has the ability to fly. He gets all his power from a reservoir, but if he drains the reservoir he will lose his powers and have to return to Hell.
Because Spawn was an assassin when he was alive, he has the knowledge necessary for both armed and unarmed combat. He can transform any object into a weapon, but his costume of chains and a red cloak are his primary sources. Various nefarious characters come across the Spawn in the many adventures and go down to defeat just as quickly as they arrive.
The success of the Spawn comics has spurred two spin odd comics – Angela and Sam and Twitch. A movie has also been made based on the comic, an animated television series, a game and action figures. Even though these comics are relatively new, they are collector’s items with the early editions selling for over $10.00 each.
