Supergirl

Supergirl has emerged in comics in many different ways. In one of the issues, she is Superman’s cousin and first appeared in issue #123 of Superman. Although there are several versions of Supergirl, the story line basically remains the same. She was sent to Earth after the planet Krypton was destroyed. She has the same powers as Superman and has the ability to fly. Superman decides that her presence on Earth has to be kept secret while he trains her in how to use her powers. She takes on the identity of Linda Lee, an orphan. She wears a brown wig to cover her blond hair and her adventures revolve around helping her friends at the Midvale Orphanage.

In Action Comics #285, Fred and Edna Danvers adopt her and she does reveal her true identity to them. She attended high school and seems to have an ordinary life complete with boyfriends. In the meantime, as she battles the powers of eveil she also has to deal with a cat with super powers and Dick Malverne, a former orphan.

Supergirl grows up through the pages of the comics. She goes on to complete high school, go to college and then she became the main character in Adventure Comics, which came out in June, 1969. Her character mirrored the changing times as she experimented with hairstyles and fashions. Her contact with Superman became very infrequent, but they still did have some contact. She moved from being a student to a reporter and an actress within the pages of the comics.

The run of the Supergirl comics was cancelled in 1984, but after the rebirth of Superman in the 1980’s her origin was completely rewritten. A new Supergirl title came out in 1996 and the original Supergirl finally reappeared in 2002. Here she married Superman and had a daughter.
